Soy Candles

Another thing I have learned recently from The Honest Life book by Jessica Alba is to buy soy candles. If you burn regular candles with any type of fragrance that is not an essential oil, you are breathing in phthalates & toxins! Don’t you remember, phthalates are harmful because they mess with your hormones & can cause reproductive issues! Also, some candle wicks contain lead!!

If you have ever shopped for soy candles, you realize quickly that they can be very pricey compared to regular candles. Do I want to burn soy candles to create a clean, toxic-free environment in my home? Yes! Can I totally afford to buy a soy candle for every room in my house? No, I can’t. Fall especially is my favorite time of the year to burn candles, so I decided to try & make my own soy candles. Yes, they still cost more, but this way I am saving a bit by buying in bulk, I can create my own scents using only essential oils, & I am going to sell them for Speed the Light (Speed the Light helps fund Assemblies of God missionaries around to world with essential transportation & creative communication to get the gospel where it needs to go).

*Soy candles also burn longer than regular wax

The process is actually quite simple. If you are interested in making your own, I’m not an expert, but I have some tips to share. Buy soy wax chips in bulk from Amazon rather than Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. Even with coupons at Hobby Lobby, Amazon had way better prices for the wax. I also bought all my essential oils on Amazon because they tend to have better prices than candle-making websites & craft stores. Use a double broiler to melt the wax. Once melted, add your oil. I am still trying to figure out how much oil to put in. They are essential oil candles, so they will be very lightly scented anyway, but my first batch of candles turned out a little too light. Mix the oil & wax then pour into a clean, dry jar or glass container with a wick already in place. I secured my wicks to the jars with a hot glue gun.

You may want to do your own further research on the temperature the wax should be, how much oil to put in, etc. If you would like to purchase a soy candle, they sure would be great Christmas gifts or just something nice for yourself. I won’t be taking custom orders, I will just sell them as I make them here on my blog here. Comment to buy! Give me your email & the candle/s you want. First come, first serve!
